Psychosocial support for Palestinian refugee children and Dom children

2884_liban_embed Terre des hommes (Tdh) provides vital psychosocial help to the children of Palestinian refugees and of the Dom community who are in a very precarious situation in Lebanon.

Help for refugees

Tdh works in 3 Palestinian refugees’ camps and 12 Palestinian refugees’ gatherings in the South of Lebanon to provide a protective environment for the extremely vulnerable children. Lebanon has not signed the United Nations Convention on Refugees, and the refugees therefore have very few rights and are faced with huge problems accessing appropriate assistance, particularly in the psychological field. Through case management, youth micro projects and the participation of the community and various stakeholders, Tdh is building a very much needed child protection system.

Help for marginalized communities

Tdh conducted an action-oriented research on the Dom community, a very marginalized Lebanese community. The Dom are an ethnic minority group who live in many countries of the Middle East, including Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq. In general, Dom communities are either isolated from major dwellings or located near poor, marginalized areas, and their children are facing risks in terms of access to basic services (education, health) or living conditions (child labor, poor accommodations…). Tdh developed a child protection project to meet the needs of their children in 8 sites in the South of Lebanon.

Side Notes

Children’s situation

  • 50,000 Iraqi and 40,000 Palestinians refugees live in Lebanon
  • Refugee children (aged 8-15) work for 5 to 7 USD per week

Results 2010

In Beirut, the project of psychosocial support for Iraqi refugees continued for a further year. 75 people received aid from psychologists and 313 families were helped.

For the second year, Tdh continued its work in the camps for Palestinian refugees in South Lebanon. The camp authorities renewed their confidence in Tdh, which consolidated the collaboration. 531 families and 666 youngsters were looked after by our teams.

Tdh also worked with 43 particularly vulnerable children who needed specialised monitoring.

70 young people set up small community projects and 121 employees of local NGOs received training on the “management and transformation of conflicts”.

Testimonial

Although the Committee for the Rights of the Child has called upon Lebanon to combat discrimination against refugee children, many are still suffering and have to support their families from a very early age on, like Nesrine and Mahamad.
