Psychosocial Support for Mothers and Children who are affected by Violence
Terre des hommes (Tdh) has been active in the Palestinian Territories since 1973. Since 1984, the local organization “Ard El Insan” has been an important partner in the Gaza Strip.
Children in the Palestinian Territories are living in the middle of an armed conflict that cost a dozen of their lives every year. The main problems are on the one hand the violence which they experience either as witnesses or as victims, with severe psychological consequences. On the other, a large part of the population is suffering from malnutrition. In addition to this, the socio-economic conditions are difficult, and access to employment, health care and education is restricted.
Mother and Child Care
Tdh is supporting Ard El Insan’s programme for the prevention of malnutrition through activities in the communities and the promotion of breast feeding.
Education
In Gaza, Tdh and its partner organization are supporting those families which have been particularly affected by the military intervention in 2009, in order to reintegrate their children into school.
Psychosocial Support
In cooperation with UNICEF, Tdh is employing a technical team to coordinate psychosocial and psychological activities in Gaza. In West Bank the foundation is working directly in the schools of the Hebron region to accompany the most affected children. Psychosocial activities and recreation are implemented to improve relationships with parents and teachers. Since 2009 the method “movement, games and sports” which was developed by Tdh in 2005 has been in place. It is showing positive results, allowing for the personal and social development of the children through sports and games.

Side Notes
The Situation for the Children
- Half of the population in Gaza is under 18.
- The mortality rate for children under 5 is 27‰ (CH: 5‰)
Results 2010
In Gaza, Tdh and its partner Ard El Insan finalised a project for school reintegration for 50 youngsters from poor families badly hit by the 2009 conflict. Their families were financially supported with micro-projects.
The Ard El Insan health centre carried out a nutritional evaluation of 2,695 children, and made 2,502 mothers aware of breastfeeding, malnutrition and child health.
Tdh worked together with people from the technical unit of mental and psychosocial health in Gaza to improve their skills of intervention with children.
In Hebron, the psychosocial project continued in the schools, helping 7,528 youngsters. 3,900 could join in Movement, Games and Sport sessions.
An evaluation of justice for minors was carried out with the aim of developing a future project in the Hebron and Gaza regions.
Testimonial
If you go to the market square of Lomé, the “Grand Marché”, you can tell that Tdh has been trying to improve the living and working conditions of the girls who work there. They are at high risk to be exploited or abused, and the hard work is often physically too demanding.*
