Combating marginalization and migration of vulnerable children

163_romania_img8_embed Terre des hommes (Tdh) has for many years been combating the trafficking and exploitation of particularly vulnerable children in Romania, concentrating mainly on children who are potential migrants because of poverty and marginalization.

Combating exploitation and trafficking

By putting in place a child protection network focused on children at risk in Craiova in the south of the country, Tdh is working in collaboration with institutions to prevent the scourge of child exploitation and trafficking. Tdh has assisted members of consultative community councils in five partner communities. Prevention campaigns and training mean that communities have a better understanding of their role in child protection.

Social protection and combating early school drop-out

Tdh is combating poverty, segregation and social exclusion of particularly vulnerable children, especially those in the Roma community, who live in extremely precarious conditions. A programme to prevent early school drop-out has involved the creation of five study centres that can accommodate around sixty children of primary school age.

Get up and MOVE

  • Approx. 10% of the active population work outside the country
  • Rate of early drop-out from school in Romania: 20%

Results 2010

Terre des hommes worked mainly in seven communities from Dolj County, involving 140 local actors (social workers, teachers and Roma mediators, experts, animators, instructors trained by Tdh) in identifying 1,372 vulnerable children and by offering them afterschool activities, psychosocial activities and other different direct support. Afterschool activities enabled children to increase their knowledge and skills and also significantly improved their school attendance. During the summer holiday, an amount of 651 activities were conducted in 13 communities in which over 800 children took part. In organizing and conducting activities, 40 animators were involved, guided and supervised by two monitors. In parallel, social workers were strengthened in their capacity to monitor children at risk of trafficking and exploitation.
