Psychosocial support for children in camps for displaced persons

185_sudan_img5_embed Since 2004, Terre des hommes (Tdh) has been operating in IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps in West Darfur, providing assistance to victims of the civil war. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has authorized Tdh to act as team leader in charge of camp coordination. In 2011, almost 26,800 people benefited from the activities implemented.

Psychosocial support

Tdh promotes the child protection system with a psychosocial approach, by setting up leisure centres for children and juveniles. Hundreds of children benefit from this support with access to education and participation in recreational activities. The centres are run by local, Tdh-trained instructors.

Camp coordination

Tdh is responsible for the coordination of services, the circulation of needs-related information and adequate & adapted solutions within the camps. The Foundation organises local committees which bring together NGO representatives, local leaders and mothers. Tdh also provides training opportunities to government-backed social workers who are working in the camps. Awareness campaigns and the circulation of information on children’s rights, hygiene, fire prevention and drinking water contamination etc. are organised on a regular basis.

Construction and maintenance of housing

Tdh provides the most vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) and new arrivals with the necessary material and support to build housing and also promotes community participation and the use of own or local material available in the camps.

Children’s situation

  • 50% of the victims of the conflict are children
  • 700,000 children have known nothing but civil war

Results 2011

2011 was marked by a strong emphasis on the internally displaced persons return processes by both government and humanitarian agencies in West Darfur. Tdh provided support to conflict affected communities in El Geneina, helping to improve their access to adequate assistance, strengthen their pro-activity in addressing identified needs, and increasing both their knowledge of their rights and their abilities to claim from responsible authorities. Organised in three major components (camp coordination, shelters services and child protection), the strategy was consistent with the efforts Tdh has made in previous years to address needs unmet by both communities and institutional actors. The approach focused on building the capacity of local communities to promote their direct engagement in activities and therefore the long term sustainability of the project.
