Afghanistan: Tdh patrols in the streets of Kabul
26 Aug 2010 Lack of family supportAfghanistan
At the beginning of July, TDH started to implement directly the street patrol activities, at night, in 2 districts where there are a lot of street and working children.
The staff of 16 persons, four of them women (divided into 3 teams), has been trained on the Tdh Child Protection Policy, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and how to get shop owners to sign the code of conduct. There is close contact with the police districts, as well as the communities, including with community leaders and mullahs.
The staff has already been able to identify 57 children who have been interviewed, their files filled in, and the street patrol team is discussing/negotiating with their families to take the children away from the streets. The teams also identified 3 children (boys) who have been sleeping rough in a local park for the past 2 years. The children have been referred to the Aschiana (Tdh partner) emergency shelter, their families traced and after 2 days the children were reunited with their families. The social workers are keeping an eye on these children to avoid their going back on the streets.
