Colombia: Flooding – Tdh brings emergency relief

29 Jun 2012 Humanitarian crisesColombia

enfant.jpg Following the floods which hit the district of Cordoba, Terre des hommes brings aid to the inhabitants of the Villa Jimenez quarter in Monteria.

The rains having continued for many days now, Tdh has provided the community with a pump to drain away 1,640 litres of water each minute and so helps the families in a critical situation. 140 water filters have been distributed to the worst-affected families. This distribution was backed by information on the use of the water.

A campaign of health promotion was also organised to tell the families about the illnesses caused by bad water from the flooding. This campaign, realised with the support of the health centre, allowed us to identify and take into care those children found to be ill or undernourished.

In the coming days, Tdh will continue to distribute water filters to 700 families in this quarter.

The rainy season on the Caribbean coast of Colombia risks being a long one, but Nerly, the mother of a family in this quarter of the town, is reassured by being supported and feels she wants to help her own neighbours: “This trial should strengthen our links of solidarity within the community”.
