EPFL Conference - Technologies for sustainable development: A way to reduce poverty?
22 May 2012 Various, Health and nutritionSwitzerland, Burkina Faso
Whilst scientific research can be crucial in guiding innovation and development throughout the world it remains often too detached from reality, particularly in developing and emerging countries. Thus, the challenge is to link scientific research and development practices in order to develop a win-win situation in which science and technologies can assist practitioners as well as reply to social needs.
The EPFL conference, organized from May 29th to 31st, will look at how science and technologies can support both sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in developing and emerging countries. Terre des hommes will be part of this conference and will show an innovative strategy implemented in Burkina Faso. The ‘Electronic Register of Consults’ (ERC) improves the quality of the diagnoses made by health personnel who are often under-trained and work in rural areas. This IT software allows generic guidelines for the integral care of children’s ailments to be respected in all situations, as laid down by the World Health Organisation.
