Mauritania - Servant girls victims of violence

21 Aug 2009 Trafficking, abuse and exploitationMauritania

The new project “Protection and rehabilitation project for servant girls victims of violence and mistreatment” was launched by Terre des hommes in Mauritania in collaboration with the Association of Women head of household. The project is funded by the Spanish Cooperation (AECID). This action falls within the framework of strengthening the capacity building of associations caring and rehabilitating vulnerable groups of the society, in particular underage girls working as servants and living in difficult conditions, often victims of mistreatment, violence and sexual abuse. The employers wrongly accuse them of theft when the girls do not indulge to their whims. The servants are neither sure to be remunerated nor to avoid beatings and imprisonment.
