Pakistan/Afghanistan: Intervention for the floods’ victims
- Published by Darcissac, Marion
Although the floods led to few human casualties in Tdh’s intervention regions, the already impoverished population has lost all its belongings and livelihoods. Hygiene risks are on the increase. Immediate assistance will be provided to the most vulnerable affected children and families.
In Pakistan, Tdh intervenes through its partner, a local NGO, in two districts in the Peshawar zone (Charsadda et Nowshehra). One objective is to help 2,000 children to go back in school. They receive school books, and, at the same time, food items (flour, rice, oil) and non-food items such as tents, blankets, hygiene kits, utensils, cooking utensils are offered to 10,800 children and their parents.
Afghanistan was also affected by the floods. Here, Tdh intervenes in the areas near the Pakistani border: the districts of Monandara and Lal Pura (province Nangahar). Food items and non-food items are distributed. In collaboration with the Directorate of public health, Tdh contributes to the construction of health camps where the foundation can get medical treatment to the families displaced by the disaster. Severe cases are then transferred to the appropriate medical institutions.
In both countries, four child centers are also going to be set up where 400 children will have an opportunity to take part in recreational activities which will contribute to reassuring them and help them get back to normal.
All in all, we expect to help 20,000 people, including 12,600 children, in a dozen villages.
