Fight against child trafficking

Built on the 2001's effort to track the phenomenon of child trafficking and fight against it, Terre des hommes' (Tdh) project primarily concentrates its efforts in Albania and Greece in direct field intervention and capacity building.

Tdh's Transnational Action against Child Trafficking aims to establish a national child protection safety net in Albania where relevant structures are developed, have clear roles and responsibilities to better respond to the needs of the vulnerable children and curb the phenomenon of child abuse, trafficking, neglect and exploitation. Tdh has been able to create a real movement in favour of child protection in Albania mobilizing both public and non-public local structures. One of the most significant achievements of the project during last year has been the development of this safety net which has been clearly documented in the ìAlbanian New National Strategy against Child Trafficking 2008-2010.

The three main challenges for this project to continue involve:

  1. the launch of further Child Protection Units (CPU) on a municipal level in all the country;
  2. the development of a system of early detection and prevention of child abuse at school;
  3. the mobilization of the most vulnerable communities – mainly Roma and Evgit Gypsies – to mainstream child's rights promotion on a community level through emphasizing the role of school and developing relevant alternatives to child begging and trafficking.
