In Burundi, Terre des hommes (Tdh) promotes respect for the rights of minors in conflict with the law and offers legal assistance to young people in prison.
Tdh supports the administration of juvenile justice by installing mechanisms for protection of child rights. These legal mechanisms aim at protecting minors against abuse of deprivation of liberty and promoting education and reintegration. Two training courses have enabled 165 professionals from the field of juvenile justice – police, lawyers, magistrates and social workers – to improve their knowledge.
Tdh headed intense activity in the National Assembly during the reform of the legal framework, which now takes into account the need for facilitating the return of the minor into society by giving judges the possibility of pronouncing measures for education, protection and supervision for the minor. Tdh's social workers carry out social investigations to aid magistrates take the appropriate measures for each youngster.
At the beginning of 2009, the Ngozi prison held 70 minors and 1020 adult prisoners.
