The story of Roberta

One of the first challenges in combating the vulnerability of Roma children is to prevent them leaving school early. “Classes after class” allow some 60 children like Roberta to stay on at school.

Roberta lives in Marza, a small isolated village, around 50 km from Craiova. She has 3 younger brothers and her family has no source of income except for the small amount of money her parents occasionally earn. In danger of having to drop out of school because she had to look after her brothers, Roberta has been helped by Tdh.
First the team ensured that she had a clean space in her squalid home to do her homework. She went to a holiday camp in the mountains with around forty other children also being helped by Tdh, as well as to the holiday activities (twice a week in July and August).
At present, Roberta is one of 55 children from 5 communities who are benefiting from catching up on their education in day centres organised by Tdh, so they can avoid dropping out of school.
