Adama’s Story

BF_Marches2012_dpliant_fr.jpg

Adama is a 10 year-old boy from a small village in Burkina Faso. His parents have migrated to Côte d’Ivoire for economic reasons.

When Adama is 8 years old, his mother dies. His father marries a new wife and places Adama in the care of an uncle, who, in turn, migrates to Mali. Adama is miserable. He stops eating and becomes very ill. His grandfather, who still lives in the small village in Burkina Faso, learns of the live-threatening situation his grandson is in and decides to intervene. He takes Adama home and brings him to the local health post where a doctor examines him. The doctor diagnoses Adama with severe malnutrition and Kwashiokor. On his old bike, Adama’s grandfather brings him to the closest city, Tougan. Here, Tdh provides free nutritional and medical care at the hospital. After two weeks, Adama is ready to leave the hospital and to return home with his grandfather. In his village, Tdh finances a health post where he receives regular check-ups free of charge. Today, Adama is no longer malnourished. He has learnt to trust and love his grandfather and plays with the other children of the village.
