Oranges to treat children

For more than 50 years, the Swiss people have had the opportunity to bring invaluable aid to children in need by taking part in Terre des hommes’ sale of oranges. Join our 1,500 volunteers all over Switzerland for the next sale – on 14 and 15 March 2014 – and you, too, will be giving access to medical treatment and good health to the children deprived of their rights.

Parallel to the sale of oranges in the streets, Tdh has developed the sale of oranges to businesses, not as well-known by the general public. More discretely, this allows a company to express its solidarity and affirm its corporate social responsibility.

In 2013, the action as a whole collected over CHF 850,000. In the coming year we should be able to do even better – thanks to you!

ORANGE P.O.S 2014

Volunteer for a good cause March 14th and 15th
Volunteer your time for Tdh’s annual fundraising Orange sale. On March 14th and 15th, 250 stands will be set up in Swiss cities, and we need you to help make the fundraising sale a success! You can help in many ways: sell oranges at an existing stand for a few hours or organize a new stand with your friends or colleagues in the city of your choice. Leave your contact information on our online form and we’ll get back to you right away.

The sale of oranges and its impact
The orange, fruit of the sun and a synonym for health, is the symbol of solidarity used by Tdh since its first sale in 1961. On 14 and 15 March, for CHF 3, passersby can purchase an orange – the first step towards a child’s recovery.

The takings from this action go in full to Tdh’s health projects that benefit one-and-a-half million children and their families every year. In 18 countries, Tdh fights against child malnutrition, checks up expectant mothers, improves access to water, hygiene and sanitation, and finances the transfer of children for surgery in the university hospitals of Bern, Geneva and Lausanne.

What Tdh can do with:
50.- Swiss francs: treat a child with acute malnutrition requiring 2 weeks in hospital (exemple from Nutritionnal center in Inde)
100.- Swiss francs: enable a year’s free access to health services for 20 children under 5 (exemple from Burkina Faso with an average of 3 visits per child and per year)

The sale of oranges to companies
In 2013, 1,000 companies allowed us to collect over CHF 400,000 for children in need. You can now order your boxes of 60 oranges at www.orange.tdh.ch and offer a vitamin-rich day to your employees!

frupale.JPGOrigin of the oranges
Our oranges, provided by COOP, are picked in the Valencia region of Spain by Frupale, producers of oranges for three generations. This company is GLOBAL.G.A.P certified and GRASP audited, ensuring respect for the environment and guaranteeing a responsible approach to the health and safety of their workpeople.

The orange remains an extraordinary symbol of health reflecting Tdh’s energy to contribute to the recovery of so many vulnerable children and bring help to their communities.
