The history of Tdh’s emergency operations
1960, Algeria: Algerian children, escaping war and famine, come to Switzerland with Terre des hommes.
1965, Vietnam: victims of war are cared for locally or in Switzerland by Terre des hommes. Biafra: more than one thousand children are evacuated to Gabon by Tdh.
1971, Bengal: ten million refugees on the roads of eastern Pakistan. Terre des hommes is among the first to bring aid.
1973, Ethiopia: due to drought and famine, several thousands children lose their parents. A village is created to welcome 450 orphans.
1974, Benin: following drought, a nutritional centre for severely malnourished children is created.
1975, Bangladesh: following devastating floods, two nutritional centres are opened, followed by school and professional training programmes.
1976, Lebanon: during the war, medical and social assistance is provided for handicapped and/or orphaned children.
1979, Cambodia -Vietnam: around a hundred children, among the ‘boat-people’ escaping on the China Seas, are given permanent refuge in Europe. Cameroon: Terre des hommes brings help to 90,000 refugees from Chad who lack food and medical care. Children are dying in their hundreds. Brazil: an emergency food and medical care programme is organised for child victims of drought in the northeast.
1985, Ethiopia: Terre des hommes brings emergency relief and provides ten months of food aid to 90,000 starving people. Sri Lanka: refugee children are cared for in regions affected by civil war.
1989, Lebanon: emergency action for 20,000 children sheltering from bombardments.
1991, Bosnia-Herzegovina: the start of emergency aid in Tuzla with the distribution of necessary supplies.
1997, Colombia: establishment of a psychosocial and nutritional project for children displaced by civil war to the shanty-towns of Cartagena. Kosovo: Terre des hommes brings help to refugees in Albanian camps, and helps children to overcome their psychological trauma.
2000, Afghanistan: emergency action for people fleeing conflict zones.
2003, Algeria: emergency relief for earthquake victims.
2003, Iran: emergency action for earthquake victims in Bam.
2004, Sudan: protection intervention in Darfour for people displaced by the conflict. Sri Lanka: emergency action following the tsunami along the eastern coast at Batticaloa.
2005, Pakistan: emergency action for earthquake victims in Kashmir.
2006, Lebanon: distribution of first aid material to refugees of the South Lebanon conflict; psychosocial care of children and families returned home.
2007, Bangladesh: distribution of food and clothes after the cold wave as well as food distributions after the floods in the region Kurigram. Peru: Sanitation and water supplies as well as psychosocial activities for children after the earthquake in Pisco.
07-08, Bangladesh: medical emergency aid, distribution of food, clothes and cooking kits after the cyclone Sidr in Barishal; sanitation and water supplies.
2008, Myanmar (Burma): distribution of medical emergency kits and sanitation.
