Alarming situation in Myanmar
Since the military takeover on 1 February 2021, Myanmar is facing an unprecedented political, economic and social crisis. In addition to the insecurity in which millions of people live, the COVID-19 pandemic has further increased the basic needs of families. Nearly one million people are in an extremely vulnerable situation. Families with young children and pregnant women are particularly at risk. Cases of malnutrition in the poorest urban areas are rising.
“Given the combined effects of COVID-19 and the ongoing political turmoil, a humanitarian crisis is looming in the poorest urban settlements. Families urgently need food, clean drinking water, hygiene kits and medical services”, says our country representative in Myanmar Martin Swinchatt.
Terre des hommes provides emergency aid to 115,000 women and children in the Hlaing Thar Yar community. Our teams distribute drinking water, hygiene products and nutritional supplements to the most disadvantaged families. Pregnant women with life-threatening complications are referred for emergency medical care. We also provide psychosocial support for the most vulnerable children. The World Food Programme (WFP) recently announced that an additional 3.4 million Burmese are at risk of hunger over the next six months.
