Online course in juvenile justice
In collaboration with the International Institute for the Rights of the Child and the Centre for Children's Rights Studies of the University of Geneva, Terre des hommes is launching the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Juvenile Justice. The first students start June 2017.
This certificate trains professionals within the legal sector in Latin America in regards to children’s rights within the judicial system. The training aims to raise awareness amongst professionals working with children and young people who have come into conflict with the law of the principles and values of restorative justice - which rebuilds broken social bonds/links rather than breaking them - so that they adapt such restorative techniques and integrate them into their professional practices. The CAS certificate in juvenile justice is aimed primarily at judges, public prosecutors, lawyers, social workers, phycologists and health workers, as well as other professionals working within local and international NGOs/organisations.
Course teaching is conducted entirely online – a somewhat new technique within the field of international training as most current training programmes are conducted almost entirely offline with face-to-face teaching. Thanks to this new innovative teaching format, course participants can follow the full range of lessons via video, which is given by international lecturers and experts – two of which are current members of the United Nations Committee of the Rights of the Child. Participants are fully guided, supported and provided with relevant evaluation and feedback in their work and research by online tutors.
The course runs for 12 months through distance learning, online work and personal study. The syllabus consists of five modules, four of which are based on various themes related to juvenile justice, in addition to one module dedicated to the end of year assessment. Following an initial testing phase, we aim to offer places to 150 professionals.
As a low costs course fully accessible online, this certificate is a great option for professionals. Registration per student is 2500 CHF – a price which is much lower than many current similar training courses. We have been able to keep course fees low thanks to outside funding, especially that of the Service de la Solidarité Internationale de Genève, the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and Green Leaves Foundation.
This course is taught in Spanish. After an initial testing period, the programme is due to be adapted into other languages.
