In Ecuador, criminal liability begins at age 12
Ecuador is one of the countries in Latin America that imposes the harshest sanctions on children and young people in conflict with the law, in addition to having one of the lowest ages of criminal responsibility – 12 years. This situation makes it difficult for young people to positively reintegrate themselves into society. Terre des hommes runs a restorative justice programme, where young offenders receive psychological support and vocational training.
