What is the issue of access to water in the world?

Nepal - Gravit'eau

In a few figures :

The issue of access to water remains a major global concern. According to the World Health Organization ( WHO ), in 2019

1 in 3

people in the world do not have access to clean water

4.3 billion

people lack basic sanitation

3 billion

people do not have access to handwashing facilities

Lack of access to clean water and sanitation is one of the leading causes of child mortality worldwide. Every year, 297,000 children under the age of five die from diarrhoea, caused in part by drinking unsafe water.

Reducing disparities

Although drinking water and sanitation coverage has increased in many parts of the world, considerable inequalities remain. Those most affected are generally the most disadvantaged, including families in poor communities and rural areas.

Sustainable Development Goal 6

Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to ensure access to safe water and sanitation for all by 2030. This means investing in sustainable and accessible water and sanitation infrastructure, building local capacity, improving water management, fostering innovation and encouraging community participation. It is also important to recognise water as a common good and to ensure equitable and sustainable access for all.

Terre des hommes improves access to water

Terre des hommes’ projects aim to ensure that drinking water and sanitation services are managed safely. Our local teams and partners provide recommendations for proper hand washing at key times, household water treatment and storage, food hygiene and safe faeces disposal. These messages are tailored to the practices of each community. During natural disasters or conflicts, Terre des hommes teams provide clean water and hygiene items to affected populations, with a special focus on children. We also rehabilitate and improve the life span of water and sanitation infrastructure.
